I knew Dave through high school and part of university back in Calgary. We met - damn, was it actually as early as junior high school - on a bbs and would play games while talking on the phone for hours and hours. Sometimes until one of us fell asleep. We'd exchange C64 games over the modem at a a wopping 300 baud (later tricked out to 450bps). We did that for quite a while until we first met - at an arcade in downtown calgary. lol, how goofy is that... We must have been like 13 or 14.

Shortly after, I moved in with my mom closer to him in the NW. This might have been high school times. (We had a similar domestic situation and I think that gave us something extra in common.) We hung out at his place dalhousie a lot, playing more games. I'd make cheats with the "snapshot" cartridge and he's make demos - changing backgound/border colors in cool patterns and stuff. He had some buddies in germany who he'd exchange demos with and get more and more cracks for games.

I dunno if you knew him back then, but he had this dog. This three legged dobermin(sp?). It was a nice enough dog, but holy crap this thing. It would fart like you wouldn't believe. Seriously, it was this silent but deadly stench that would make your nose curl up and your eyes tear. They also had some wacky print hanging on the wall. It was of a nude woman lying on her side with a huge snake covering her up. Heh, funny the things you remember.

I also remember his thick, dark hair, his love for Bruce Lee, and alternative (if you can call it that) music. I only knew his mom and sister a little. Mostly it was just us hanging out.

Throughout high school and part of the time I went to UofC, we partied a lot. Heh, I'm sure that surprises you. He was more of a drinker than I was, and a bit of a bad ass - I'm sure that surprises you, too :) I introduced him to some friends once, and I remember that all the chicks wanted him for his eye lashes. /shrug they just loved those lashes.

We'd stay up all night playing games or just hanging out, then go ride around on our bikes through town. One time I remember we were looking for something to do so we thought, "hey, lets drive around with this BB gun and shoot things." Oh yes, we were upstanding kids. So we did. He drove while I sat in the back and shot things. I wasn't a particularly good shot, but I think I got some jogger in the butt. I also hit the garbage can of one of his neighbors. That's when the fun started. We drove back home and hung out for a bit, then got a call. It was the police, asking us to come out of the house with our hands up. "WTF?" Yup, we came out and were surrounded by police. It was pretty freaky. I don't remember what happened to him, but I was driven off to the police station for a good talking to. In the end, they let us go. They thought we were some other people who were criminals actually doing some damage up in NW Calgary.

We sure did some stupid things back then - some very stupid things. But all in all, we had fun, no one got hurt and I think we had a really good friendship. I miss those days.

After university, we lost touch completely. I moved down to San Francisco in 2000 to do infosecurity stuff and am now here in Portland, OR. Recently, I was at a friend's wedding and was talking with one of his aunts who told me about how he used to play on his computer all the time. Well, I started thinking about those days, too, and naturally the memories of Dave popped up. This is how I came to google him to try and get back in touch and see what the hell he was up to. I didn't know he had passed away until 30 minutes ago and I'm deeply saddened by the loss. I think I'm also a little pissed that I didn't do this a few years ago. Fuck, we were living in the same city (SF), for pete's sake (and both playing EQ)!
