Young Policeman Bound Over on Charge of Stealing Motor-Car Mascot

Police-Constable Dudley Harry Stewart Neilson 19, of Brixton Road, S.W. appeared in the dock at Lambeth Police Court on Saturday, and pleaded "Guilty" to stealing a mascot and a radiator cap, valued at 3 pounds, from a motor-car at Canterbury Road, Brixton. Detective Inspector Halliday said that the owner of the car, Charles Baker, commission agent, of Underhill Road, E. Dulwich, left it unattended at night in a car park near Brixton police station. Neilson, who was off duty and in plain clothes, removed the mascot and cap and took them away. They were traced to him and he frankly admitted taking them, but said he did it more or less in the spirit of a "rag" such as he took part in his college days. He had been at a public school, and joined the Metropolitan Police ("L" Division) in May of this year. There was nothing, apart from this case, against his character. He was within a week or so of entering the Police College when he committed this act. Mr Geoffrey Rose, binding over Neilson for 12 months, said: "I don't suppose you will do anything like this again."
